Pleasant snow day surprise

MANAYUNK - February 4, 2009 - With the city's budget woes, many residents expected snow plows to only clear the major roads.

But folks in Manayunk and South Philadelphia, who often have to navigate narrow and untreated side streets, got a pleasant surprise when the plows came rolling through.

The day after a significant snow fall in Philadelphia, we usually hear stories about people complaining in places like Manayunk, Wynnefield, and South Philadelphia, that their neighborhoods were shunned by the road crews.

This time though, the city is getting a big thumbs up from the locals and they're giving Mayor Nutter the credit.

"I can see why you couldn't plow every street with the economy the way it is, but it was a pleasant surprise," said Jack Harmer of South Philadelphia.

In fact, we spoke to several people in Manayunk who say certain streets, which in past years were avoided on a wholesale level, were plowed, salted and sanded.

"I came home early this morning and didn't have any problem at all," said Mark Jennings of Manayunk.
