Car wash survivor

EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - February 10, 2009

Nineteen-year-old Stephanie Carpluk of Chicopee was released from a Springfield hospital Tuesday with black eyes and welts on her neck.

Her scarf choked her after it got caught at the Golden Nozzle Car Wash. She says she remembers being scared before blacking out.

That's when John O'Leary jumped out of a vehicle on the car wash rails, used a pocketknife to cut Carpluk loose and gave her mouth-to-mouth. Another customer called 911.

The car wash's parent, F.L. Roberts of Springfield, is investigating. Steven Roberts says he thanks the "exceptionally courageous" O'Leary.
