The Royal National Theatre production will be put on at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington in September. The play will follow a three-month run in London, including a performance to be simulcast in movie theaters around the world in June.
Mirren, who will play Phedre, made her reputation on London stages before winning the best-actress Oscar two years ago in "The Queen."
The play also features "Mamma Mia" heartthrob Dominic Cooper.
Michael Kahn, artistic director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company, says the wife of British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald suggested the production come to the theater's new playhouse, which opened in 2007.
