On the Net: Health info, Twitter 101

Right Now On The Net
February 18, 2009 Online Doc

Many of us have become accustomed to having medical advice at our fingertips. But how can you really trust the information you're reading? A new website says it's all about the sources.

Just because you get results for a particular inquiry doesn't mean you're getting the right ones. After all, anyone can search the Internet and anyone can contribute to it; when it comes to your health be careful which sites you trust. Medpedia.com claims to be different. It is a long-term, worldwide project to evolve a new model for sharing and advancing knowledge about health, medicine and the body. But only trained professionals can write and edit pages. Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley are all contributing partners.

Twitter 101

Ah, the art of twittering. It has become an art, you know, and now, it has it's own style guide. 140characters.com is still developing, but it summarizes the book called 140 characters. It is a style guide to becoming a great Twitterer. In addition to telling you how to make the most of your 140 characters, it will also provide some twitter etiquette, like what you should twitter about and what is simply TMI. You can order the book off the website, but expect the book to be available for download on Apple's iPhone by the end of the month.

Life's lemons

They say laughter is the best medicine. That's what lifeslemons.net has in mind. Three sisters founded this website anticipating that most people will be dealt some lemons in life, but there isn't always a Hallmark card for some more precarious situations or taboo topics. So this site offers comfort cards for things like plastic surgery or divorce. There are also some more offbeat cards for happy occasions like getting married or having a baby.

Video filter

Talk about what's happening right now! Eguiders.com just launched on Tuesday. This site uses a collection of industry insiders to help people weed through the clutter of a video saturated Internet to find the ones worth watching. Among the insiders are some Hollywood heavy hitters including executive producers from 24 and Private Practice. The site lists videos by genres and offers picks of the days. Right now, you can find clips of Oscar winning films throughout the last 8 decades.
