Stroke link to fast food eateries

HOUSTON, TEXAS; February 19, 2009

Researchers studying one Texas county discovered that residents in neighborhoods with more fast-food restaurants had higher stroke rates. Some neighborhoods had THREE TIMES more fast-food restaurants than others.

A neighborhood with 33 or more eateries had a 13-percent higher stroke rate. Each additional fast-food restaurant in the neighborhood increased the chance of stroke by 1 per cent.

Researchers aren't sure whether the easy availability of high-fat, high-salt food is to blame...

Or whether fast-food restaurants cluster in neighborhoods where more people make unhealthy choices.

Fast-food consumption has previously been linked to higher rates of heart disease.

Each year, nearly 800,000 Americans suffer a stroke.
