Man shot by police in Burlington County

February 22, 2009 10:57:41 AM PST
A man was shot early Sunday morning by police after approaching two on-duty officers with a knife. At approximately 12:30 two Riverside police officers on patrol in a marked car heard someone screaming outside the front of a residence in the 100 block of Bridgeboro Street.

The officers stopped, exited their car and were confronted by 34-year-old Brian Backes who was wielding a kitchen steak knife.

The officers ordered Backes to drop the knife. Instead of complying with the demand he advanced toward the officers with the weapon.

Backes was shot twice in the chest, once in the leg and once in the hand. He was taken to Cooper University Hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed Sunday afternoon in critical condition.

The knife was recovered at the scene.

The shooting is being investigated by the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office's Major Crimes Unit and Special Investigations Unit.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duty while the incident is investigated.
