Camden mayor won't seek re-election

Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison says she won't seek re-election. The 84-year-old Faison, who has been mayor since December 2000, made the announcement Monday evening. She declined to explain her decision.

Faison, a former council president, was appointed as the city's first female mayor after her predecessor, Milton Milan, was convicted on corruption charges in 2000. She was then elected mayor twice.

In 2002, the state installed a chief operating officer to oversee the troubled city's government.

Though she says she not officially backing anyone, Faison alluded that she would support Democratic state Sen. Dana Redd, the front-runner in the mayoral primary.
