Man wears many hats, really

LITTLESTOWN, Pa. (AP) - February 25, 2009

Littlestown Borough Council President Rick Adams says he just hopes residents who objected don't get upset over any unusual garb other crossing guards may start sporting in the name of freedom of expression.

Borough Manager Linda Hess says she issued the offending order when she saw a car swerve near crossing guard Larry Douthwaite. She feared his headgear - anything from a Santa hat to a Nittany Lion's head or a pharoah's hat to a cheesehead - distracted drivers.

The order drew fire from about 30 people, and a petition from schoolchildren, at Tuesday night's council meeting, and vote to rescind it was unanimous. Douthwaite says he's been wearing the hats for 15 accident-free years.
