Corrections officer accused of sex assault

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) - March 2, 2009 Lon Sainato, a 52-year-old Whippany resident who has worked for the county since 1996, was charged with sexual assault and official misconduct.

County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi said the incident occurred Feb. 22, while Sainato was supervising the 30-year-old inmate as he performed community service at the Cedar Knolls Fire House. The man was serving 60 days of community service through a program run by the county sheriff's department.

Bianchi said that according to the inmate's sentence, the man was on probation or parole but was "institutionally detained" on the specific days on which he performed community service.
