Crews find more munitions on beach

SURF CITY, N.J. (AP) - March 4, 2009 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it has unearthed 453 potentially explosive fuses and ordnance since the work began on Jan. 26.

The greatest number were unearthed in recent days.

The corps unwittingly sucked the munitions from the sea bed and pumped them ashore as part of a massive beach replenishment project begun in late 2006.

Beachgoers began finding them in 2007.

Crews hope to finish work by May 22, days before Memorial Day weekend and the start of the summer beach season.
