2 dead in apparent murder-suicide

SOLEBURY, Pa. - March 5, 2009 Bucks County 1st assistant DA David Zelklis says the body of 48-year-old Jerry Rudman, a Global Projects Manager with Glaxo Smith Kline, was found in a garage by a cleaning lady just before 9:00 a.m. this morning. There were three shell casings on the ground beside him.

Police believe his partner of 21 years, 50-year-old pharmaceutical consultant Joseph Lofft, shot Rudman and after unsuccessfully trying to clean up the scene got another gun and killed himself.

"Eventually he went into his own bed and took the 357 magnum and shot himself between the eyes," Zellis said.

Police say there was a violent struggle before the murder-suicide.

"The amount of blood, the location of the blood, there is some broken furniture and some other lamps and things that were toppled over," Dominick Bellizzie of Solebury Township Police said.

Authorities don't know what prompted the violence, but say Joseph Lofft was arrested around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday morning near the couple's home for drunk driving.

A coworker of Jerry Rudman's says colleagues were worried yesterday when he didn't call and didn't show for an important meeting.

"He was the most lovable, friendly happy-go-lucky, sincere person you could imagine," coworker John Covin said.

"We just saw Jerry last week and he recently got a promotion to vice president, just came back from a trip to Australia and was just on cloud nine," friend Toni Covin said.

He left a suicide note for his mother to take care of the cats and told her where the will was located.
