"Godmothers" make prom affordable

PHILADELPHIA - March 6, 2009 - Starting Saturday, March 7th, area students facing family hardships will once again pick from some 5,000 stunning gowns that are new or gently used.

You could possibly find the gown of your dreams for as little as five dollars.

Joyce Jesko, who had to fight with her parents to go to her senior prom, is playing the role of Fairy Godmother. She started the non-profit organization called the "Fairy Godmothers" nearly a decade ago to help teens in need.

"It makes us feel so good. I tingle throughout my whole body," Jesko said.

She gets the gowns from area stores like David's Bridal and even individual donations.

"With the economy this year, I'm sure their parents are saying 'There is no way we can do this,'" Jesko said. "So I am here to tell you 'Parents, yes you can go to the prom.'"

The prom fair is only open to juniors and seniors with school ID and family hardships.

The fair will run every Saturday through the end of the month. See below for hours.

During the week, counselors or social workers can get appointments for private sales. See below for more information.
