Nutter trashes garbage fee proposals

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - March 9, 2009 The administration had come up with two ideas in recent weeks: levying a flat $5 weekly fee per household for trash collections, or charging $1 or $2 per bag for trash picked up.

Both proposals met with strong opposition from residents and even city council members.

Nutter had hoped the estimated $100 million per year that he said would be raised from the proposals could be used to help ease the city's projected five-year $1 billion budget deficit.

On Sunday, Nutter said the trash proposals are now off the table and not likely to be brought back again.

Still under consideration: less frequent trash collections.
