Nutter trashes garbage fee proposals

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is scrapping proposals to charge city residents extra for trash collections. The administration had come up with two ideas in recent weeks: levying a flat $5 weekly fee per household for trash collections, or charging $1 or $2 per bag for trash picked up.

Both proposals met with strong opposition from residents and even city council members.

Nutter had hoped the estimated $100 million per year that he said would be raised from the proposals could be used to help ease the city's projected five-year $1 billion budget deficit.

On Sunday, Nutter said the trash proposals are now off the table and not likely to be brought back again.

Still under consideration: less frequent trash collections.
