Elderly attack victim speaks out

UPPER DARBY, Pa. - March 10, 2009 - 74-year-old /*George Mirzayan*/ tells Actions News he was a victim of an unprovoked assault.

"I need protection from these people. They are evil people," Mirzayan said.

It was difficult for him to speak. He told Action News his jaw was sore and he was enduring intense pain from the swelling and bruising around his eyes and nose.

Mirzayan says after a shopping trip Monday afternoon his neighbor, 23-year-old /*Amir Sheikh*/ attacked his 64-year-old sister Victoria, leaving her with a nasty bruise on her forehead.

"I just can't believe it happened for no reason," Victoria Mirzayan said.

George Mirzayan says when he tried to protect her, the 23-year-old repeatedly hit him and kicked him on the ground until Mirzayan was unconscious. Mirzayan was taken to the hospital, and was released last night.

Sheikh is charged with aggravated assault. He was released on bail but ordered to stay 5 miles away from Mirzayan.

"The law has got to punish these people," Mirzayan said. "They'll kill me."

Both Mirzayan and Sheikh's attornies tell Action News there has been an ongoing dispute between the neighbors over a parking spot.

"One of the victims initiated this. She spit on him," said Ejaz Sabir, Sheikh's attorney. "They both attacked him and this is self defense."

Sabir added that his client has recently seen Mirzayan carrying a knife, and Sheikh was simply defending himself. Sheikh would not answer any questions.

Mirzayan says he no longer feels safe in his home of 50 years and is looking for an apartment.

This apparent dispute has been going on for a few years. Neither man has had any prior police record.
