Cause in deadly crane collapse

NEW YORK - March 11, 2009 - The city Buildings Department faults the contractors in charge of raising the crane. It says they didn't attach the right number of protective slings to the collar and attached them in the wrong place.

The crane toppled from the 19-story tower under construction last March 15. It smashed a townhouse and damaged more than a dozen other midtown Manhattan buildings. Six construction workers and a tourist were killed.

The report's conclusions are similar to other probes into the collapse. Manhattan prosecutors have indicted the lead contractor for the rigging company on manslaughter charges.
