Dealing with domestic abuse

March 12, 2009 19-year-old John Taylor is remembering the incident that caused the breakup between him and his 18-year-old girlfriend Kelly Sundstrom.

"You know what? I did a really bad thing. It wasn't good. It wasn't right," Taylor said.

"We were arguing about having sex," Sundstrom said.

Even though John had never abused her before, she couldn't continue the relationship.

"My sister had quite a few abusive relationships, I've seen them and my family's gone through them, so I've learned once that guy hits you, he's going to do it again," Sundstrom said.

"I am deeply sorry from the bottom of my heart and I hope that she realizes that. I don't know what else I can say," Taylor said.

Romeire Brown has not been in an abusive relationship with another teenager, but has witnessed them, and has experienced abuse from his father, which he says has impacted his relationships.

"It definitely helps me control my anger because I don't want to go ballistic on somebody who really doesn't deserve it, because I'm having a bad day," Brown said.

Many teens who grow up in abusive households, do continue that pattern in their own lives, but when it comes to teenage dating abuse, logic rarely plays a role.

Often they lie for their abuser.

"They don't have that experience yet, they're still kids," Upper Darby social worker Mary Cannon said.

Another shocking statistic is that more than 75-percent of parents surveyed either believe that teen dating violence is not an issue or don't know whether it is.

Because it transcends race, gender, and socio-economic lines, it's even more important that parents get education as well as their children.
