NJTP workers get $11M in OT in 2008

HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) - March 16, 2009 Officials say overtime is a cost of running the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. The heavily traveled roads are open around the clock. Accidents and spills mean workers are needed to help out.

Authority officials also say chronic absenteeism has been a problem too.

When toll collectors call in sick, their colleagues are asked to fill in. That's why overtime can be racked up quickly.

The authority has cracked down on absenteeism for the past two years by requiring some workers to bring in doctor notes to verify illness.
