Officer injured in Manayunk crash

March 18, 2009 3:49:35 AM PDT
The officer was in his patrol car responding to a call, when he collided with another car on a Manayunk street.

21-year-old Paul Port was taken to Temple University Hospital for treatment then released early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened at about 8:15 pm. The 5th police district officer was responding to a street fight at Main and Cotton in Manayunk.

Police say the officer was traveling down Main Street with lights and sirens on. The 2nd car was on Green Lane and coming through the intersection when the two vehicles collided. The office required medical attention. He was semi-conscious at the time.

The air bags did not deploy and damage to the cars was relatively minor. The other driver was detained and questioned by police but there is no word on any charges.

It appears the accident was nothing more than just that but given the recent tragic history of the Philadelphia Police Department, incluing two officers killed in car accidents, there were once again some tense moments.
