The University of Pennsylvania says an undergraduate student has been released from the hospital after recovering from meningitis. The student had fallen critically ill earlier this month. Penn posted a statement on its Web site Saturday saying the student had left the hospital.

It was the fourth case of meningococcal infection this year on the Ivy League campus in Philadelphia.

Meningitis is a contagious and potentially fatal infection of the central nervous system.

Three students who contracted the illness last month also recovered. As a precaution, the university offered preventive antibiotics to thousands of students.
