Bucks Co. drivers warned: 'ZOMBIES AHEAD'

Richland Township, Pa. - March 24, 2009

It's becoming a something of a trend across the country. Pranksters are re-programming electronic sign boards at highway construction sites.

Instead of warning people about lane closures, the signs tell motorists, "Zombies Ahead," or "Beware of Zombies." Similar incidents have been reported in New York, Illinois, Texas - and now in Richland Township, Bucks County.

Neighbors we spoke with don't seem too surprised.

"Just somebody having fun, goofing around... you know," said Warren Craft of Quakertown.

"Kids are kids," said Jessica Desiderio of Richland Township. "If it's teenagers, they have nothing better to do."

Pranksters were busy over the weekend at a bridge reconstruction site on Route 212 in Bristol Township. Commuters were supposed to see a flashing sign indicating that the bridge was closed. Instead, they saw a digital warning: "Zombies Ahead." The electronic signs have been removed. Officials from the Pa. Department of Transportation don't think it's funny.

"You're breaking into private property," says PennDOT's Gene Blaum. "And that message board is the property of our contractor and was providing a safety message for the citizens who are traveling on Route 212. "

Blaum says PennDOT is investigating how someone could break the locks, get at the controls and change the message.

While some may find the signs amusing, PennDOT says there is no question the pranksters are breaking the law. If caught, they could face charges including vandalism and breaking and entering.
