4th officer dies from Oakland rampage

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - March 24, 2009 The officer was kept alive after being declared brain dead Sunday so vital organs could be donated to four patients. The hospital says he was taken off life support Tuesday.

Police say he and his partner were gunned down when the two motorcycle officers pulled over Lovelle Mixon Saturday. Police tracked him down to an apartment, where he shot and killed two more officers. Mixon was also killed. An Oakland police sergeant calls it the biggest tragedy ever to hit his department.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Mixon after he missed a meeting with his parole officer.

A vigil is planned tonight for the officers at the corner near where the two motorcycle officers stopped Mixon.
