Diabetes: Are you at risk?

March 24, 2009 1:58:27 PM PDT
Today is American Diabetes Alert Day. It's a day to get the word out about the risk of diabetes and get more people tested.According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes affects one in nine people in Philadelphia.

Pre-diabetes, a pre-cursor to the disease, affects one in five Americans. But some people don't even know they have it.

So the ADA has launched a simple risk assessment tool. Anyone can log on and find out if they're at risk or may even have diabetes.

Early diagnosis can help prevent some of the long-term complications such as heart disease, blindness or kidney failure.

To view the online risk assessment, visit:

You can also call 1-800-342-2383. The test is free and available in English and Spanish.
