Police: Woman wanted to steal a baby

VINELAND, N.J. - March 26, 2009 It happened in the early morning hours of Wednesday. That's when authorities say 30-year-old Lisa Maines, dressed as a midwife, carrying 2 large bags and wearing id tags, got through security at the emergency room entrance of the Southern New Jersey Regional Medical Center.

Maines then allegedly got through a second layer of security before being stopped by security at the entrance to the maternity ward. She fled the hospital before police arrived, but was picked up later in the day.

Maines told police she only wanted to hold a baby. But police believe the large bags Maines carried were to conceal a child.

No word on any charges at this time.
