Site expansion unlikely for St. Joe's

Plans for Saint Joseph's University to expand their athletic fields on the site of the former Episcopal Academy in Marion have been put on hold, at least for now. The Lower Merion zoning hearing board tonight denied a permit for the university to add bleachers, baseball dugouts, and sound systems to the facility.

The university had planned to use the 32-acre site for school baseball, softball, and field hockey teams to play there.

The plan received opposition from a community group, the Merion Community Coalition, who had concerns about possible noise problems.

St. Joseph's has 30 days to appeal the ruling.

The school also has the opportunity to reapply to the zoning board for exceptions.

A university spokesperson says school officials have not had a chance to review the ruling.
