Deadly shooting in West Philadelphia

WEST PHILADELPHIA - March 27, 2009 The shooting happened outside Larry's Auto Body Shop around 10:30 a.m. in the area of 55th and Walnut streets. Police tell Action News that a silver car was sitting at a red light. That's when two men walked up to the car and unloaded their weapons.

The passenger in the car, 20-year-old Thomas Frye, died at the hospital. The driver was shot in the leg.

People nearby came out of their homes after the shooting stopped to find the driver lying on the ground, yelling for help.

Josephine Minor, who lives on the block, was one of the first people on the scene.

"He put his feet up in the air, and he turned over like he was hurt," Minor said.

About 30 shot were fired, and at least one of them went inside the auto body shop, hitting a 58-year-old man. He was shot in the leg.

Officers were able to respond so quickly because one of the witnesses is a police officer, and because the shooting happened just blocks away from Southwest Detectives.
