Six charged in death of student

NEWARK, Del. - March 27, 2009 - A spokesperson for the Delaware Attorney General's Office confirms that a charge of hazing has been flied against the Delta Lambda Chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity in connection with the death of former University of Delaware Student Brett Griffin.

The charge was filed Wednesday.

18-year-old Brett Griffin was a pledge of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. He was found unconscious by police on the floor of a frat house during a party on November 8, 2008.

He was pronounced dead of a suspected alcohol overdose.

The party was held at a house on Annabelle Street in Newark, Delaware.

On March 27th, Newark Police announced the arrest of six people in connection with Griffin's death: Police say 20-year-old Michael Bassett of Great Neck, New York and 20-year-old Travis Fiume of Closter, New Jersey were the Social Chairs for the fraternity. Police say Bassett and Fiume collected money for the party. Then, police say, Fiume went with an unnamed person who was over 21 years old to purchase alcohol, which was consumed by party guests, some of whom were under 21 years old.

During a search of the home following Griffin's death, police found 120 grams of marijuana, cash, a scale, smoking paraphernalia, and plastic baggies in a drawer belonging to Bassett. They also found a list of people who appeared to owe him money.

Bassett is charged with: Providing Alcohol to a Minor, Conspiracy 3rd Degree, Criminal Solicitation 3rd Degree, Possession with Intent to Deliver Marijuana, Maintaining a Dwelling for Drugs, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

After an initial appearance, Bassett was released on $5,100 unsecured bond.

Fiume is charged with: Providing Alcohol to a Minor, Conspiracy 3rd Degree, and Criminal Solicitation 3rd Degree.

After an initial appearance, Fiume was released on $3,000 unsecured bond.

Four others face charges in relation to the search of the home following Griffin's death.

Police say a "bud grinder" and a bottle of opened Jack Daniels whiskey was found in the bedroom of Justin Seeney. Investigators say a bud grinder is a piece of drug paraphernalia used to process marijuana before it is smoked. Seeney faces alcohol and drug charges.

Police arrested 20-year-old Michael Ciccarelli after, they say, beer was found in his room.

19-year-old Joseph Ciarletta was present when police executed a search warrant on November 8th. When interviewed by a police officer, Ciarletta exhibited signs that he had consumed alcohol, including the odor of alcoholic beverage, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes. He was charged with underage consumption of alcohol.

Police say they found a bud grinder and a hollow metallic cigarette in the bedroom of 19-year-old Henry Vieluf. He is charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The Newark Police Department says they want to hear from anyone with additional information related to Griffin's death.
