Del. police: Man steals cruiser, hits person

LEWES, Del. (AP) - March 30, 2009 Police say a trooper drove 18-year-old John Austin though a Lewes neighborhood Sunday afternoon trying to identify recently burglarized homes. Austin was arrested earlier in a domestic incident.

When the trooper got out to talk to an area resident, police say Austin drove off, hitting the resident. Police say the trooper fired several rounds trying to disable the cruiser.

The resident was treated for non life-threatening injuries. Police say the cruiser was abandoned and Austin was arrested at the Colonial East Mobile Home Park. He's charged with carjacking, assault, burglary, resisting arrest, escape, theft and other charges.

The trooper has been placed on routine administrative duty.
