Mascots mix it up

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - March 31, 2009

And now both mascots are in trouble.

New Mexico State's mascot Pistol Pete has been suspended by the Western Athletic Conference for one game.

He'll have to sit out the first conference home game next basketball season.

Utah State's Big Blue Ox has already served his one-game suspension for the incident during the WAC Tournament earlier this month.

The mascots had a scuffle during the semifinal matchup between the schools.

Blue ripped off Pete's fake mustache.

Then Pete jumped on Blue and tried to choke him.

Neither school is releasing the names of the students involved.

Conference officials say the mascot suspensions are to make a point about good sportsmanship.
