2 central Pa. newspapers combine operations

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) - April 1, 2009 Officials of Lancaster Newspapers Inc. say the Intelligencer Journal and the Lancaster New Era will begin publishing a single edition Monday through Saturday starting June 29. The Lancaster New Era is currently an afternoon paper.

Company officials say they will cut about 60 full-time jobs and 40 part-time jobs over the next few months as operations are streamlined.

Lancaster Newspapers president Harold E. Miller says the decision came as a result of the economic downturn and increased operating expenses related to publishing two papers with separate staffs.

The company's Sunday paper, the Lancaster Sunday News, is unaffected.
