Mrs. Fixit: Refinish Metal

April 12, 2009

First things first, safety precautions. wear safety gloves, glasses and a mask while you're working. The first step is to remove the existing rust. Any big flakes can be scraped off with a 5 and 1 tool or putty knife.

Depending on how much rust is left, you can use a wire brush, sandpaper or steel wool. Work carefully, scraping away all the rust. Anything that's left behind will continue to spread.

When you're done, vaccuum the piece thoroughly to remove all the residue. Then wash the piece with soap and water and let it dry completely.

Once it's dry, you need to coat the piece with a rust inhibitor or another protective top coat. You can choose a clear coat or a metal primer in paint depending on the finish that you're looking for.

See, restoring rust and metal may not be as hard as you thought it was. I'm Mrs. Fixit as it's just that simple.
