Smoke forces residents from Center City building

CENTER CITY - April 5, 2009 Fire crews were called out to The Benjamin Franklin Apartments, located in the 800 block of Chestnut Street at 2:15 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke on the 14th through 17th floors.

Crews were forced to go door to door looking for the source of the smoke.

Residents were first evacuated outside then allowed to wait in a ballroom on the first floor while firefighters tried to locate the fire.

The source was located in a mechanical room on the third floor and extinguished.

Firefighters placed the incident under control around 4:30 a.m. and residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
