Suspect attacks Phila. cops

"He breaks down once he stops taking his medications and loses it," said one neighbor.In the 2600 block of Bouvier in South Philadelphia neighbors call police. A man who lives on the block is acting in an aggressive manner, supposedly stripping off clothing and throwing belongings into the street.

When the police arrive:

"He attacked the responding officers. He was very violent and acting very bizarre. He grabbed an officer's weapon and wouldn't release the weapon," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

There is a struggle over the gun, a second officer tries to use pepper spray to subdue the man.

"I was going up my steps and heard a gun shot I didn't think anything of it until all the police were going up the street," said Mike Hines.

Neighbors identify the man as 42-year-old Frank Dukes. They claim he has a history of behavior problems.

Both the officer and the assailant were taken to the hospital. The suspect has serious, but reportedly non life threatening injuries. The injured officer is being treated for minor injuries.

As for the gun shot police say there will be a full investigation.

The officer reportedly suffered some facial injuries and the suspect is due for surgery, he is in stable condition.
