85 laid off from Del. solar panel facility

NEWARK, Del. - April 8, 2009 - GE Energy spokesman Tom Rumsey says the plant cut two of its three shifts and the facility now employs about 200.

Rumsey says orders have been falling and inventory piling up as potential customers struggle to find financing for photovoltaic installations, which convert sunlight to electricity.

GE Energy began operating in Delaware in 2004 after it bought the assets of AstroPower Inc. out of bankruptcy.

Since the acquisition GE has received more than $1.8 million in state grants.
