School bus driver arrested for assault

NEWARK, Del. - April 9, 2009 - Police say the driver, David V. Burns, Jr. , 62 of Wilmington, was driving students home on Tuesday, April 7th.

During the trip, police say a 14-year-old student from Kirk Middle School made a statement targeted at Burns' driving.

According to authorities, Burns invited the student to to the front of the bus and, when it was pulled over, the two began to argue.

It was then, police say, Burns punched the student in the face.

The student got off the bus, and his family took him for treatment.

Burns was charged on Wednesday, April 8th for one count of Assault 3rd Degree (Misdemeanor). He was arraigned and issued a $250 unsecure bond with a no contact order pending a later trial date.

Burns later resigned from his position as a bus driver with Advanced Student Transportation.
