MIAMI - April 10, 2009 - Closing arguments wrapped up Friday morning after a six-week
trial in Miami. Castroneves, his business manager-sister and his
lawyer are accused of conspiring to evade some $2.3 million in
taxes between 1999 and 2004.
Prosecutors say the three used an offshore company in an
intricate plot to avoid taxes. But defense lawyers say Castroneves
paid all U.S. taxes he owed and left his finances to advisers while
he focused on winning races.
All three defendants face more than six years in prison if
convicted. The two-time Indianapolis 500 champ also was won TV's
"Dancing With The Stars" in 2007.
