New Castle County police say an 8-year-old boy found a loaded handgun while playing in the woods near his home. Police say the boy's discovery led officers to uncover two more guns stashed nearby.

Officers called to the home in the 300 block of Silver Run Trail on Friday found the first gun in a gun box. A search of the area turned up two more guns - a loaded pistol in a sock and a loaded sawed-off shotgun in a plastic bag.

Cpl. Trinidad Navarro says there have been a number of street robberies in the area. He says police believe the weapons were used for some sort of crime because someone who had them legally wouldn't stash them along a footpath.

Police believe all three guns were stashed by the same person or people.
