Batting coach is legally blind

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - April 13, 2009

But he's a batting coach.

Wetzel has been legally blind for 45 years.

The players he's coached range from little leaguers to Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.

He teaches ball players to relax at the plate and center on the ball.

One former major leaguer says he has no idea how Wetzel does it, but it works.

Wetzel is able to use his peripheral vision to see some shapes and outlines.

The Omaha, Nebraska, coach says baseball has been a passion since he was a kid.

And he wasn't going to let blindness keep him from the game.
