Camden police shoot, hospitalize man

CAMDEN, N.J. - April 17, 2009 The man who was shot, Devon D. Burns, 24, of the 500 block of Trenton Avenue, was being treated at Cooper University Hospital for a shoulder wound.

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation, and are releasing few details about the incident.

They have said the officer who fired the shot is 39 years old, with 10 years of experience. Investigators say the officer fired one shot at Burns at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of South 4th Street.

Police say a handgun was recovered from Burns at the scene.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, police say, which is a standard procedure whenever an officer discharges his weapon and causes injury.

Burns has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Drug Possession and weapons offenses.
