Guthrie Theater kicks off Kushner celebration

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - April 18, 2009 The Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of "Angels in America" is debuting a new play next month at the Guthrie Theater, and the Guthrie is marking the occasion with a lengthy celebration of Kushner's work.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak proclaimed Saturday "Tony Kushner Day" in the city.

Kushner, on hand for the event, declared the Guthrie the country's "flagship regional theater."

Guthrie artistic director Joe Dowling called Kushner "the pre-eminent playwright of our time."

The new play is "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures."

The drama debuts May 15 and is about an Italian-American family set in Brooklyn, N.Y.
