Wearable books from Philadelphia artist

PHILADELPHIA - April 21, 2009

That question may sound strange, but not to a local artist.

These personal journals are hand-bound with antique leather, the work of artist Margaux Kent. But lately, Kent's work has been shrinking.

She's producing miniature books, intended for you to wear.

Kent's books, small and large, are hand-sewn and then bound. They have no text, but she gives each a title and each comes with a certificate telling its background.

She's traveled the world seeking leather with character. There's never enough. Fans of her work have been known to give her antique leather, too.

Ken't latest enterprise gives her plenty of time to create, while still enjoying her young son, Soren.

The wearable books are available online, in the gift shop of Philadelphia's Mutter Museum, and at trendy Arcadia Boutique in Northern Liberties. That shop specializes in eco-friendly clothing and accessories from sustainable sources.

Owners of the boutique say Kent's creations and the boutique are a marriage made in heaven.
