Police search for suspected scammer

BENSALEM TWP., Pa. - April 21, 2009

Police in Bensalem report the man is wanted for 4 crimes in the township and 1 in Philadelphia. He claims that he needs help for a broken down car and gets money from people trying to help him.

The suspect is described as:

  • White male
  • Thin
  • In his 30s
  • About 5'8" tall
  • Weighs about 170lbs
  • He has gray short hair and a partial beard
Police say the subject has been approaching people in parking lots, and has struck at the Wawa at Bristol & Galloway roads, the Neshaminy Mall and Target. He asks for cash to help pay for car trouble he's been having.

The victims have been driving him to an ATM where they withdraw anywhere from $50 to $150 cash and give it to him. He then asks to be driven to either the Sunoco at Bristol and Neshaminy Boulevard to "pay the repair bill" or back to Target where his car is. He promises to send them the money back which he never does.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the actor or have been involved in similar incidents are asked to call Bensalem Detective Chris McMullin at (215) 633-3700.

Police are warning people to never pick up anyone and put them in your car. Call 911 and a police officer will assist.
