Another dead dolphin in NJ River

RUMSON, N.J. (AP) - April 23, 2009

Rumson police reported spotting a dolphin carcass in the Navesink River near the Oceanic Bridge Tuesday night, but it has yet to be recovered.

There's no immediate word whether the dolphin might have been part of a group of 16 bottlenose dolphins that spent half of last year in the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers.

If it was, it would be the fourth dead dolphin to surface within the past two weeks, and the seventh of the original 16 to die.

Animal rescue groups had wanted the dolphins removed from the river, fearing they would die in the winter. Federal wildlife authorities decided to let nature take its course.
