Wounded officer involved in shooting

LOGAN - April 28, 2009 The shooting happened around 1:00 Tuesday afternoon in the 4900 block of Warnock Street in the city's Logan section.

Sources tell Action News the officer was Richard Decoatsworth. He was on a motorcycle when he was jumped by the suspect, Anthony Allen, 26.

Police say Allen attempted to take Officer Decoatsworth's gun.

It was during that struggle that, police say, Officer Decoatsworth shot the suspect.

However, Allen ran away only to encounter another police officer.

Investigators say Allen struggled with that officer, and tried to take his gun. He was shot again, and taken to Einstein Medical Center.

Allen was pronounced dead at around 1:30 p.m.

Allen's family says he is usually okay... when he's taking his medication for mental illness.

"He's a good person, he's not a bad person at all," said Allen's brother Troy. "He was just off his medication."

As in all police-involved shootings, this is being investigated by the internal affairs unit. So far, police say, it appears the attacks on the officers were unprovoked.

Officer Decoatsworth's jaw was shattered after being hit by pellets from a shot gun blast during a traffic stop in 2007.

He was a rookie on the force when that shooting happened.

More recently, he was a guest of President Barack Obama during his speech to a joint session of Congress. Decoatsworth sat next to First Lady Michelle Obama.
