Polk County officials say Buckner has resigned after his wife and his mother-in-law took his patrol car for a spin.
Gail Buckner and Sharon Cooper now face a number of charges, including vehicle theft and impersonating an officer.
Authorities say they were tipped by witnesses who saw the patrol car weaving.
