Armed bank takeover in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - April 29, 2009 - It happened at around 8:25 a.m. Wednesday at the Beneficial Bank branch at 9910 Frankford Avenue.

Police say the branch manager and a teller had arrived to unlock the bank. At that point, one of the two suspects forced his way into the branch at gunpoint, letting the second suspect inside.

According to investigators, the men then re-locked the doors and bound the bank's two employees.

Philadelphia Police tell Action News that they believe that the suspects got away with around $135,000.

The entire incident took about 20 minutes. The employees were not hurt.

The suspects are both described as black males, 5'10" to 5'11" tall, slender builds, wearing blue jeans, dark hooded sweatshirts, black masks over the lower parts of their faces, and gloves.

They are considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 215-418-4000, or the Philadelphia Police Department. There may be a reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the bank robbers.

Tipsters can remain anonymous.
