Looking for a lost time capsule

April 30, 2009 4:18:18 AM PDT
County officials in Mississippi are digging for a time capsule ahead of their weekend bicentennial celebration.

One problem: They don't know exactly where it is.

It was buried in 1978 somewhere beside the Amite County Courthouse in Liberty. There was a marker for it, but Mayor Ricky Stratton says that was moved in 1984.

The key people who buried the capsule are all dead and no records can be found with the exact location.

Stratton says people have been using probes, shovels, metal detectors and posthole diggers seeking the capsule ahead of Saturday's bicentennial plans.

He says part of the courthouse lawn is "well-aerated."
