Brown vs. white sand

SIESTA KEY, Fla. (AP) - April 30, 2009

In fact, he loves it so much he was willing to be arrested.

The 70-year-old threw himself on the sand and was charged with misdemeanor trespassing.

He was protesting plans to spread brownish sand on the white sands of Siesta Key in Sarasota, Fla.

The county wants to use the brown sand to fill a hole left after the removal of an old seawall.

But area beach lovers contend it's the white sand that makes their favorite seaside spot unique.

Siesta Key is often listed as one of the best beaches in the country.

The white quartz sand stays cool in the sun.
