70 more Morning Call layoffs

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - May 3, 2009

Publisher Tim Kennedy says a score of vacant positions will not be filled, but about 50 employees will be affected.

Kennedy said in an e-mail to employees that "the traditional newspaper business model is broken and we fight hard every day to build the foundation for a new one."

He said it was "painfully ironic" that the paper's audience reach has grown while financial results continue to worsen.

The cuts will leave the newspaper's work force at about 580 people.

The Morning Call's daily print circulation has dropped 8.9 percent from a year ago to 99,111, and Sunday circulation declined 7.2 percent to 130,693 compared with a year ago.
