Bike race to go underground

GREENLAND, Mich. (AP) - May 5, 2009

This year, the bike racers will have to go underground.

A portion of the five-mile race will be inside the Adventure Mine in Greenland, Michigan.

Mine owner Matt Portfleet says it could be a tight fit.

He tells a local TV station tall riders might have to get off their bikes and push.

The mine is now a tourist attraction.

But it had been an active cooper mine in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The underground bike race is set for July 12.
