Lawmaker tries to ban half-sibling marriage

DOVER, Del. (AP) - May 6, 2009 Sen. Michael Katz said it seems logical that a half brother and half sister shouldn't be able to marry. The issue came to his attention after Sussex County Clerk of the Peace George Parish was asked to marry a half brother and half sister.

Currently, Delaware policy is not to grant marriage licenses to half siblings and a whole host of full-blood relatives. But the law doesn't ban marriages between half siblings.

So Katz introduced a bill last week in the Senate after clerks of the peace in all three counties requested such legislation to close the loophole.
